Porsche 356
Ferry Porsche’s son; Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche drew up some sketches in 1959. The flat six overhead cam engine gave its name to the car, type 901. The 901 was the work of Hans Mezger and Ferdinand Piech. Ferry Porsche insisted upon keeping a fastback shape like the 356 and stopped using pushrod engines and opting for the overhead cam design.
Production on 901 began in September 1964 (0/zero series). After the Paris auto show in October 1964 Peugeot claimed rights to all car model numbers with zero as the middle digit. Porsche decided to switch rather than fight Peugeot and the 911 was born. However internally the 911 was referred to as the 901, even parts numbers carried the prefix 901. The 911 reached the U.S. and went on sale for $6,500 and had a 5 speed transmission and 2.0 litre engine.
In 1966 the Porsche 912 entry level model was made. In 1967 the 911 S (Super) and the 911 R were made. The 911 T and 911 L were born in 1968, the 911 T (Touring) was downgraded to 110hp to become more affordable. The basic model became the 911 L (Lux). In 1969 there was an overhaul which improved handling, heating and ventilation and the interior was updated which brought with it a smaller steering wheel. There were now three lines; 911 T, 911 E and 911 S.
The 912 production was stopped in 1970 and the 914 took its place with a 2.0 litre engine. The 911 T, E and S had their engines enlarged to a 2.2 and also included bigger valves and a larger clutch. Also in 1970 Porsche converted to a 10 digit serial number, the first 3 digits being the model number. In 1972 The T, E and S were kept but changed significantly one of the changes was another engine upgrade to 2.4 litres.
