The
Porsche Boxster is a well made and durable machine. Designed from
scratch as a sports car rather than using parts from regular sedans,
Its a sweet handling chassis with fabulous brakes and a great hood.
Irrespective of the model, buy a decent example and you will enjoy one
of the worlds most fun sportscars.
There
is no 'bad' year to buy. The earliest cars would be from late 1996
(1997 model year) and these will be 2.5. From late 1999 (2000 model)
the 2.7 replaced the 2.5 giving a little more horsepower and noticeably
more torque in the midrange. If on a budget for a tiptronic Boxster its
worth looking at the 2.7.
Also
for the 2000 model year a large engined Boxster 3.2 S was introduced.
These are super sports cars with a 6 speed manual gearbox or tiptronic.
They have bigger brakes, stiffer chassis and 260 hp.
These
models are known as the 986 series and ran until the launch of the
newer shape 987 Boxter, introduced in late 2004. The only significant
change to the 986 series was in 2003 when Porsche replaced the plastic
window of the soft top with a heated glass window. This is know as a
facelift although it was mild and only changes in the plastic bumpers
and moulding distinguish these.
From
the 2005 model (987) almost every detail of the Boxster changed. It
offered a newer 2.7 motor giving 240 hp (up from 220) and a new 3.2 S ,
again more horsepower. Significant changes were made to the refinement,
ergonomics , handling and performance. Although the two series shared
the same style, if you look closer you will be hard pushed to find any
parts that the old and new model share.
