Porsche 911 2.7

United States laws impacted on the 911 appearance for the 1974 model year. New protruding bumpers designed to absorb 5 mph impacts. A small front spoiler was added which meant the indicators were moved into the bumper.

T and E models were dropped from the 911 line up and the base model was now called the 911. The 911S became more like the previous E model and the Carrera became the top performance model.All models had a larger 2.7 litre engine and a Targa was added to the Carrera line up in 1974. The U.S. 911 and 911S had a four speed manual transmission but most were delivered with the five speed option. A Larger 21.1 gallon fuel tank was added and a space saver spare tire became standard equipment. U.S. cars got an electric air compressor to pump the spare tire up with. Rest of the World (ROW) came with a container of compressed air. A non folding fibreglass Targa top replaced the folding version as standard equipment. The latter remained as a necessary option for cars with air conditioning because the air conditioning takes up trunk space. Visible changes were made to the interior with new high backed seats with integrated headrests. Armrest storage was upgraded with top mounted flaps for easier access. The Carrera had a 3 spoke leather wrapped steering wheel.

In 1975 the base model 911 was stopped in the U.S. Porsche divided production of the 911S and Carrera into 49-state cars and California cars based on emissions controls. 49 state cars had air pump where as California cars had thermal reactors and exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems. A new quieter exhaust equipped all 911’s. Base 911 models had ATS (cookie cutter) wheels replace the current steel wheels.

Turbo model production started in 1975 (see turbo page). A silver anniversary 911 option was offered on 911and 911S Coupes and Targas, 1,063 Silver anniversary 911’s were produced. In 1976 the outside mirrors were painted the same as the body colour and electronically controlled. United States, Canada and Japan models were fitted with injection pumps, thermal reactors and EGR to meet stricter emissions laws in 1977.
